Iran has been prohibited from the International Judo Federation when it arranged Saeid Mollaei to pull from the World Championships in Japan.
Defending champion Mollaei dismissed calls to take away from his match against the Khasan Khalmurzaev of Russia to avoid the prospect of facing the Sagi Muki of Israel.
Athletes are prohibited from competing in any sport against Israel.
Mollaei has been living in Germany and lost in the semi-finals.
Earlier in 2019, the National Olympic Committee of Iran had said it would comply with the Olympic charter and the International Judo Federation (IJF), paving the way for Iranian athletes to compete against Israelis.
But the IJF said Iran’s activities in the World Championships in Japan were a”gross contradiction” to these assurances.
The case has been known to the IJF Disciplinary Commission, who said that there was a”strong reason to think that the Iran Judo Federation may persist or repeatedly engage in misconduct or commit some other offence against the valid interests, principles or goals of the IJF”.
Iran can appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against the decision.
After the tournament Mollaei stated he feared for the security of his family.
Talking to the BBC Persian Service earlier this week, he explained:”In Tokyo I left the arena with tears in my eyes.
“I won’t ever forget what happened . I could have attained my gold medal and my third world championship trophy. I was ready and prepared for this.”
